What a tax invoice has to show
In the UAE a VAT invoice is called a tax invoice, and the document should say so. A registered business is expected to show:
- The words “Tax Invoice” where they are easy to see. The generator puts them in the title.
- Your name, address and TRN, a 15-digit Tax Registration Number. The generator checks its length as you type.
- Your customer’s name, address and TRN if they are registered.
- A sequential invoice number and the date of issue (and the date of supply when it is a different day).
- For each line: a description, the quantity, the unit price, any discount, the VAT rate and the amount.
- The totals in AED: the amount before VAT, the VAT, and the total payable.
Worked example: AED 2,000 of services at 5%
Before VAT: AED 2,000.00. VAT at 5%: AED 100.00. Total payable: AED 2,100.00.
Standard, zero-rated and exempt
- 5% standard is the usual rate.
- 0% zero-rated covers things such as exports of goods and services. You still issue an invoice and show the sale on your return.
- Exempt supplies carry no VAT and sit outside what you can reclaim against.
Only need a figure? The VAT calculator adds or removes VAT from a single price.
Questions people ask
Is this UAE VAT invoice generator free?
Yes. Make as many invoices as you like without an account and download each as a PDF. The free PDF carries a small 'Made with Invoiceo' line at the bottom. Invoices made inside a free account do not.
What must a UAE tax invoice show?
The words 'Tax Invoice', your name, address and Tax Registration Number (TRN), your customer's name, address and TRN if they are registered, a sequential invoice number, the date of issue and the date of supply if different, a description of the goods or services, the unit price, quantity and VAT rate, any discount, and the total payable with the VAT amount, both in AED. The Federal Tax Authority publishes the exact list.
How soon must I issue a tax invoice?
Within 14 days of the date of supply, according to the FTA's guidance. Check the FTA site for the current rule and its exceptions.
Can I issue a simplified tax invoice?
In some cases, such as small sales where the buyer's details are not needed, the rules allow a simplified invoice with fewer details. It cannot support a VAT-registered buyer's claim in every case, so the FTA's guide is the place to check before you use one. This generator makes the full tax invoice.
What if I bill in a foreign currency?
The VAT amount still has to be shown in AED, converted at the rate the rules specify. The generator works in dirhams. If you bill in another currency, convert carefully and check the FTA guidance.
I am not VAT registered. What do I do?
Choose 'Not registered for VAT': the invoice is made without VAT and without a TRN. You may only charge VAT once you are registered. Registration is compulsory above AED 375,000 of taxable supplies and imports a year and optional above AED 187,500 (the thresholds at the time of writing; confirm them on the FTA site).
Is e-invoicing required?
The UAE has announced a national e-invoicing system that is being introduced in stages. Whether and when it applies to your business depends on its size and activity, so watch the Ministry of Finance and FTA announcements. This page makes a PDF invoice and is not an e-invoicing service.
