Where the rate comes from

Canada has a 5% federal GST, and each province decides how its own tax fits in. The starting rates the generator suggests are below. Treat them as a starting point, not advice.

  • GST only, 5%: Alberta, the Northwest Territories, Nunavut and Yukon.
  • HST, one combined tax: Ontario 13%, and 15% in New Brunswick, Newfoundland and Labrador and Prince Edward Island. Nova Scotia’s rate has changed recently (the generator suggests 14%), so confirm it with the CRA.
  • GST plus a separate provincial tax: British Columbia (7% PST, 12% together), Saskatchewan (6%, 11% together) and Manitoba (7%, 12% together).
  • Quebec: GST 5% plus QST 9.975%, 14.975% together.

Worked example: C$1,000 of work in Ontario

Before tax: C$1,000.00. HST at 13%: C$130.00. Total: C$1,130.00.

Small supplier or registrant?

If your taxable sales stay at C$30,000 or less over four consecutive calendar quarters, you are a small supplier and need not register or charge GST/HST. Past that, registration is required. You can also register voluntarily, for example to claim back the tax you pay on business costs. The CRA’s pages explain both.

Only need a figure? The sales tax calculator adds or removes tax at any rate you type.

Questions people ask

Is this Canadian invoice generator free?

Yes. Make as many invoices as you like without an account and download each as a PDF. The free PDF carries a small 'Made with Invoiceo' line at the bottom. Invoices made inside a free account do not.

What must a GST/HST invoice show?

The CRA asks for more detail as a sale gets bigger. For a larger sale, expect: your name or trade name, the invoice date, your GST/HST registration number, your customer's name, the terms of payment, a description of what was sold, the total, and the GST/HST charged. The CRA publishes the bands and the exact list, so check it for the size of sale you are making.

What does a GST/HST number look like?

Nine digits (your business number), then the letters RT, then four digits, for example 123456782RT0001. The generator checks that shape.

Which rate do I charge?

It depends on where the sale is treated as made. GST is 5% across Canada. Some provinces combine it with a provincial tax into one HST (Ontario, for example, at 13%), others charge a separate provincial sales tax (British Columbia, Saskatchewan and Manitoba), and Quebec has its own QST. When you pick a province the generator suggests a combined rate as a starting point. Rates change and some goods are zero-rated or exempt, so confirm the rate with the CRA.

Does it show GST and the provincial tax separately?

No. It charges one combined rate and prints it as a single tax line. If you must show GST and PST or QST separately on your invoices, use an accounting program that does, or ask your accountant.

Do I have to charge GST/HST?

Only if you are registered. A small supplier, with total taxable sales of C$30,000 or less over four consecutive calendar quarters, does not have to register. Once you pass that, you must. Choose 'Small supplier' in the generator to make an invoice with no tax and no number.

Do Quebec businesses have extra rules?

Quebec businesses register for QST with Revenu Québec, and language rules may apply to documents given to customers in Quebec. Check with Revenu Québec and the Office québécois de la langue française.
